Content This course lies in the intersection between Computer Science and Molecular Biology. The main purpose is to study computational techniques, algorithms and data structures which are usually applied to solve problems in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry.
The following topics will be covered: mathematical models of evolution, protein and DNA sequence alignment and its meaning, phylogenetic tree construction and multiple sequence alignments. There will also be lectures on current and more specialized topics. From the computer science point of view we concentrate our attention in practical solutions for the above problems.
Target Group Students in their third year or above. The course is open to both biology and computer science students.
Prerequisites None. Biological knowledge is an asset but not a prerequisite. A strong background in probability and statistics is suggested but not required.
Registration http://courses.cs.unibas.ch/
Credit points 5
Literature No books are required but much of the material will come from CBRG (Computational Biochemistry Research Group at ETHZ) papers and we will also follow closely some chapters from the book by Dan Gusfield entitled "Algorithms on Strings, Trees, and Sequences". A good reference book for Phylogeny is "Inferring Phylogenies" by Joseph Felsenstein.
