PhD program Image Understanding and Intelligent Data Analysis
The PhD program provides advanced training in Statistics, Machine Learning, Image Analysis and Computer Vision methods. Participants enrolled in the program combine Machine Learning and Computer Vision techniques in order to analyze real-world data generated by a range of different measuring and imaging devices. They work on research projects under the supervision of a university professor at the Center for Cellular Imaging and NanoAnalytics or at the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science of the University of Basel. A PhD committee consisting of internal and external experts advises the students and monitors the dissertation progress. Embedded in a well-established research environment, PhD students are offered graduate courses and seminars tailored to their specific needs. After submission of a written thesis and a successful thesis defense, the candidates receive a PhD from the University of Basel.
Prof. Dr. Thomas Vetter, Prof. Dr. Volker Roth at the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science and Prof. Dr. Henning Stahlberg at the Center for Cellular Imaging and NanoAnalytics of the University of Basel.
Thomas Vetter (Department of Mathematics and Computer Science)
Applicants for this PhD program must hold a University qualification equivalent to a Master's degree in Science (usually in Computer Science) of an accredited University. Applications can be made directly to Thomas Vetter, or Volker Roth, or Henning Stahlberg.
Please clarify whether there is a vacancy for a PhD candidate in one of the research groups and make sure that you share some of that group’s research interests before sending on your application. Officially applying for doctoral studies in Computer Science at our University will only be worth the effort if one of our professors would be willing to give you a paid job as a research assistant in one of his projects and supervise your individual research project. Otherwise you will not be admitted. Therefore, you should first carefully study our websites, learn more about the research groups and then get into touch with one of the group leaders.
For comprehensive details on admissions, please consult the official regulations and guidelines of the University of Basel and contact the Student Administration Office. Applicants who earned their Master degree at a university outside Switzerland should contact the Student Administration Office via this page .
